Hiking at Lake Minnewanka in Banff

If you are looking for a fun day hike that you can do at your own pace, I highly recommend doing Alymer Lookout in Banff National Park. You get to walk along Lake Minnewanka for about two hours (depends if you are booking it or taking 1000 photos) on the way there, and then on the way back. My friend and I did this 24km hike in 7 hours, with a 45 min lunch break at the top, and a 10 minute "we found a family of deer" photoshoot on the way down. The distance may sound daunting but with view points keep you going.

Please note that after July 10th you have to hike it in a group of four to follow park rules. But this hike is great for a group as the trail stays wide throughout most of it.

Banff Itinerary

I was already in Calgary for a golf tournament so I arranged a day hiking trip with a friend staying in Sylvan Lake. We made it to Lake Minnewanka early to avoid any potential crowds. We saw two people coming down from the top and based one other couple so the early morning was definitely worth it.

It was about two hours of relatively flat, then a solid hour (+) of decent accent. It was extremely windy at the top but so beautiful. The trek down was easy as there was no scramble/lose rocks to worry about. Very easy trail to follow. I would say people of all abilities can do this, you would just have to allot for more time. Alltrails quotes it at eight hours.
